Kolkata: A 42-year-old man was arrested on Friday in connection with theft of flood lights from New Town.Police said the arrested person, Sk Aktar, is a resident of Narayanpur in Berabari. He was arrested when the police conducted a raid in the wee hours of Friday.On June 16, Sishir Kr Guha, GM HIDCO(Electrical), lodged a complaint with New Town police station alleging that around 20 flood lights were stolen from the area near Silicon Valley and Mothers Wax Museum.Police was keeping on the lookout for the accused. In the wee hours of Friday, a team of policemen, who were patrolling the area, found the person moving around suspiciously near Biswa Bangla Convention Centre. The person started running soon after seeing the policemen.It led to their suspicion. He was chased and finally arrested.Sources said during interrogations Aktar confessed that he used to steal flood lights from the area along with some of his associates. He also told the police that he visited the place in the wee hours of Friday with the intention of stealing the same.Police came to know from Aktar that he used to sell the stolen lights to one Saiful Ali, alias Rinku, who is a resident of Narayanpur. Police went to Narayanpur and detained Saiful. They have recovered eight flood lights that were stolen from the area.Police are maintaining vigil to avoid repetition of the same incident in the area. It may be mentioned that the area has been given a new look with the installation of new lights and various other decorations. Hence, the police are taking steps to ensure that the lights do not get stolen in future.
