first_img “All of human history has lead to this moment. The irony is we created you. And nature has been punishing us ever since. This is our last stand. And if we lose… it will be a Planet of Apes.”Whether you are a fan of the rebooted Planet of the Apes series or not, hearing Woody Harrelson as The Colonel recite these words in the final trailer for the War for the Planet of the Apes film (See Moviebob’s review here) is a bit haunting. The war between man and ape that broke out in San Francisco years ago still rages on. We are now in the final moments where it looks as if ultimate destruction is at humanities doorstep.War for the Planet of the Apes #1(W) David F. Walker (A) Jonas ScharfThe story told in BOOM Studios War for the Planet of the Apes mini-series take place two years prior to the events that occur in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. This bridges the gap between both films and tells the story that is only briefly touched upon in the new summer film.Written by David F. Walker (Iron Fist) and illustrated by Jonas Scharf (Warlords of Appalachia) the first issue in this new mini-series packs in a punch with 32 beautiful full-color pages by Jason Wordie. We discover that the war has made it all over America, stretching to a few different locations in San Francisco, Reno, Atlanta and Ocala, FL. The main plot of the story moves over to Atlanta where scientists at The Yerkes National Primate Research Center are doing everything they can to keep their studies going, but they are running out of adult male chimps to help the process move along. A bounty has been put out to take down more specimens. That’s where our story takes us to Florida following some hopeful civilians just looking for any help they can get by capturing whatever apes they find. Carnage rages on in the streets of San Fran where the initial war broke out, while Reno follows the story of a very special chimp.Scharf’s art style makes this first issue leap off the pages with a lot of depth, while decay begins to fill the streets. I think it’s pretty great that 20th Century Fox is allowing these great talents to play in the Apes sandbox. One thing I’d also like to point out is that this series takes place before the tie-in novel, War for the Planet of the Apes: Revelations, Which focuses around Ceaser a bit more.Collectors will jump at the chance to get their hands on both covers. One is a nice throwback to Full Metal Jacket, where the other is a gorgeous colorful piece by cover artist Mikhail Borulko.I absolutely love this film series, and It’s great to see more talent getting the chance to stretch their work into The Planet of the Apes universe. I’d imagine when this four-part series wraps up and the trade paperback releases, it will make for a great addition to any Ape fans collection.
