Experimentalapproaches combine mouse genetics, behavioral studies, viral vectorstereotactic gene delivery/deletion, pharmacology, functionalgenomics ( RNA -seq) and bioinformatics. Studies aim to identifygene networks and mechanisms underlying ethanol modulation of painor ethanol consumption. Studies on Gsk3b include gene targetingapproaches to identify the cellular and circuitry-level mechanismsof GSK3b action on ethanol consumption and to evaluate this gene asa target for therapeutic intervention. The laboratory has been a leader in the combined use of functionalgenomics and behavioral genetics for studies on ethanol behaviors, and has developed novel approaches for genomic analysis andcross-species integration of mouse expression network data withgenetic studies on ethanol behaviors. Dr. Michael Miles isScientific Director of the VCU Alcohol Research Center whichincludes diverse investigators studying the genetics of ethanolresponses across multiple species.
